Albani Refuge at Epiphany: A Winter Trek at the Foot of the Presolana
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Intermediate
Description
On the Epiphany, the mountain is dressed in magic, and the Rifugio Albani becomes one of the most evocative places to experience it. It stands in the embrace of the steep North face of the Presolana, a limestone wall that becomes even more imposing in winter: spires, deep shadows, and a natural amphitheater that guards the Polzone basin and lake like a small, suspended world.
We ascend above the village of Colere, in Val di Scalve, one of the snowiest areas of the Orobie Alps, where the snow transforms everything into a silent and powerful landscape. The winter trail starts from Carbonera and tackles an initial stretch of steep mule track, then takes us into a dense and muffled forest, perfect for getting into the mood of the day.
When we pass the tree line, the magic happens: the view opens up onto the Presolana and the Refuge appears on its peak, like a small high-altitude outpost. Just one last effort passing between the buildings of the old mine, and the Albani welcomes us with its warm atmosphere and the scent of the lunch that awaits us.
From here, the scenery is unique: the Presolana stands majestically behind us, while in front, distant but recognizable, the Adamello mountain range stands out. After the regenerating meal, those who wish can extend their walk towards the Polzone lake, often frozen and covered in snow, a perfect place to admire the dizzying details of the walls that tower above it up close.
A different, powerful, authentic Epiphany. A day where the mountain gives you its truest version.
