Alpe Devero in autumn: Crampiolo and the Witches' Lake

Golden larches, a timeless village and a lake with a magic name

A hike into the enchantment of Alpe Devero, where autumn colours turn every slope red, gold and copper and the woods become a living painting. We are inside the Veglia-Devero Nature Park, one of the best-preserved alpine settings in Piedmont.

From the Devero car park we reach the picturesque village of Crampiolo, a timeless place of stone houses and silence, where in autumn all you hear is the wind in the larches. We continue to the Lago delle Streghe, the Witches' Lake, set among golden larches and clear reflections: the name comes from the tales shepherds told about these waters.

It is 11 kilometres with barely 350 metres of ascent: a route suited to everyone, which takes all the time it needs for looking. Lunch at the hut in Crampiolo.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike for its length only: 11 kilometres with minimal height gain, on comfortable, well-marked trails. Suitable for families and beginners. Bring walking shoes, water and a jacket: at altitude in autumn the temperature drops quickly.
