Capanna Margherita: Conquer Your Dream at 4500 Meters!

Capanna Margherita is The Goal, the dream for anyone wishing to discover the world of high altitudes: the highest refuge in Europe, at 4454 meters on Punta Gnifetti.

It is located immersed in the glacial panorama of the highlands, on one of the highest peaks of the Monte Rosa Massif.

Reaching Capanna Margherita is a mountaineering experience, a challenge with oneself, a guided route to be experienced with one's rope companions that will be remembered forever. We will be accompanied by mountain guides who, in addition to providing us with the equipment, will help us in our adventure to proceed safely and teaching us how to move best with mountaineering equipment on a glacier.

The itinerary includes two days. The first will take us to Gressoney, where the lifts will allow us to climb to over 3200 meters at Punta Indren. Here our walking route begins: we will cross what remains of the Vedretta glacier and the characteristic rocky slabs to reach Capanna Gnifetti, where we will spend the night.

After replenishing our energy, as is customary in a true alpine refuge, we will go to bed early: the night at 3600 meters will serve to acclimatize us, accustoming our body to the altitude. The second day will start very early! Before dawn, we will have already had breakfast and prepared all the equipment: arranged in a rope team, we will begin to climb the labyrinthine Lys glacier, until we conquer its summit at the Lys pass. Here the panorama opens onto the Matterhorn, majestic and almost within reach, on the sharp ridges of the Lyskamm, and in front of us, already visible, is our goal! A flat stretch and in an instant, you are already climbing the last ramps to set foot on the much-desired Capanna Margherita! From here you can see the whole world! Below us is the Valsesia and endless mountain ranges. After the ritual shots (and a famous slice of Margherita pizza, why not?) we will begin the journey back to the valley.
