An authentic hike in the heart of Val Varrone, above Premana, where the mountains still keep slow rhythms and untouched landscapes: this is one of the least travelled valleys in the Lecco area, and you can tell.
The trail to Rifugio Casera Vecchia di Varrone climbs firmly through woods, pastures and broad slopes, offering ever wider glimpses of the Lecco and Valtellina peaks. As we gain height the surroundings brighten, up to the pasture basin where the hut stands: an isolated, silent place, the kind where you sit in the sun and do not feel like leaving.
It is 10 kilometres and 590 metres of ascent, reaching 1,675 metres. We have lunch at the hut, looking at the peaks around.
