Description

A real Dolomite summit, in five hours

From the 2,050 metres of Rifugio Col Gallina, above Cortina d'Ampezzo, we set off on a loop towards Croda Negra, in the heart of the Ampezzo Dolomites. The trail climbs over scree, alpine tracks and steep slopes to 2,507 metres: a little over two hours of climbing for a summit that delivers everything you expect from a day in the Dolomites.

The view is wide open over Passo Falzarego, the Lagazuoi and the surrounding peaks, from the Tofane to the Nuvolau. The way back closes the loop past Lago di Limides, one of the most photographed pools in the area, with the Tofane reflected in it.

It is a short but intense hike: seven kilometres and 550 metres of ascent that are felt, because the ground is loose and the gradients give no respite. That is exactly the point: real altitude, the valley opening below and the group enjoying it together.

Why come

  • a genuine Dolomite summit with no via ferrata
  • the view over Lagazuoi, the Tofane and Passo Falzarego
  • Lago di Limides on the way back
  • an easy start from the Rifugio Col Gallina car park

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike but it needs a sure step: loose scree, marked gradients, some exposed sections and route-finding not to be underestimated. Not suitable if you dislike heights. Bring high boots, poles and a windproof jacket.

Alessandro

⛰ Hi there! I’m Alessandro. I’m 34 years old and live in the heart of the Dolomites, in the Cadore region. I am a certified International Mountain Leader (accredited by the Veneto Mountain Guide Association and UIMLA), a graduate in Sports Science, a mountain bike guide, and—believe it or not—a sommelier! After all, there’s nothing like a good glass of wine after a long hike. I love experiencing the mountains in every way possible: from trekking and trail running to mountain bike adventures. For me, moving through nature is pure energy, discovery, and emotion. Sharing this passion with others is my mission. Whether we are on a scenic trail or riding through the woods on two wheels, my goal is always the same: to provide authentic, active, and restorative experiences. See you on the trails… or maybe over a great glass of wine! 🍷🚵‍♂️🌲
