A protected valley that changes colour in autumn
Autumn in Valsanguigno is pure poetry: the woods light up in a thousand shades, the meadows are carpeted in gold and the clear water of the stream reflects the foliage like a natural mirror. It is a protected valley, a nature reserve, and you can tell how untouched it has stayed.
We climb from Valgoglio along the trail up the valley to the Baita Alta of Monte Zulino (1,747 m), a perfect balcony for taking in Valsanguigno in full autumn dress, with the Orobie closing it off behind.
It is 11 kilometres and 800 metres of ascent: a moving walk, among leaves crunching underfoot and views that change at every bend. We have a packed lunch at the hut.

Who it suits
This is an intermediate hike: 800 metres of ascent over eleven kilometres, on a marked trail with no technical difficulty. Bring hiking boots, water and a packed lunch: there are no open huts along the way.
