Rifugio Fratelli Calvi: the lake basin from Carona

A basin full of lakes, in the heart of the Orobie

In the heart of one of the most captivating basins of the Orobie range, Rifugio Fratelli Calvi awaits, surrounded by alpine lakes and some of the finest peaks in Val Brembana. It is one of those places where you sit outside and no longer know where to look.

We start from Carona (1,130 m) following the CAI trail through fir and larch woods: the climb is steady but never too hard, crossing increasingly alpine surroundings. At the hut, at 2,015 metres, we find ourselves ringed by Lago Rotondo, Lago del Becco and the peaks closing the basin.

The return follows a panoramic variant leading to the Val Sambuzza waterfall, then down through the woods to Carona. It is 15 kilometres and 900 metres of ascent.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike: 900 metres of ascent over fifteen kilometres, on a marked trail with a steady climb and no technical sections. Bring boots, water and a windproof jacket for the altitude.
