Description

A 16th-century road, the trenches and an alpine lake

One of the most complete hikes in the Bergamo Orobie: a loop combining nature, history and wide views. We start from Rifugio Passo San Marco 2000, above Mezzoldo, and follow the old Via Priula, the trading road built by the Venetian Republic in the 16th century to link Bergamo with the Valtellina without crossing Milanese territory.

We walk to the historic Cantoniera San Marco, an old Venetian customs post, and continue to Passo Verrobbio, where we visit trenches and tunnels of the First World War, still where they have always been. From there the trail climbs through pastures and rock to Lago di Pescegallo, a clear alpine lake looking over the Valtellina.

The second half is a long panoramic traverse across high meadows that brings us back to the pass, closing the loop: 12 kilometres and 940 metres of ascent, six hours of walking with the view always open.

Why come

  • the Via Priula, a 16th-century Venetian road still walkable
  • the trenches and tunnels of the Great War at Passo Verrobbio
  • Lago di Pescegallo with its view over the Valtellina
  • a loop route, never retracing your steps

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike: 940 metres of ascent spread over twelve kilometres, on alpine ground but with no technical difficulty. Bring boots, water and a windproof jacket: there is almost always wind at the pass.

Come with the Guidders: book your place and let's walk the Via Priula together.
