Sentiero del Viandante: Varenna to Dervio via the Orrido

Description
The third stage: medieval villages and a gorge carved in rock
We start from the picturesque village of Varenna, among medieval lanes and pastel houses facing the lake, and climb panoramic trails suspended between water and mountains. This is the third stage of the Sentiero del Viandante, the old road linking Lecco to the Valtellina, and many consider it the finest.
Halfway along we pass through Bellano, famous for its Orrido: a spectacular natural gorge carved by the Pioverna stream over fifteen million years, crossed on walkways suspended above the water. It is the scenic highlight that makes this stage unique.
The second half crosses terraces of olive groves and vineyards suspended between lake and sky, as far as Dervio: an authentic, quiet village with its medieval tower and lakefront. Eleven kilometres and 750 metres of total ascent. The return is by train from Dervio to Varenna: the ticket is not included.

Who it suits
