There’s a place in Italy where the Apennines stop being the Apennines and start acting like the Alps. Campo Imperatore, Abruzzo’s "Little Tibet": a vast plateau at over 2,100 meters where the wind runs free, horses graze in the wild and on the horizon there’s not a power line, a warehouse, or a shopping mall. Just rock, sky and Corno Grande looking down at you from its 2,912 meters, asking you, more or less: "so, are you coming up or not?"

For three days the Guidders set up base camp in Italy’s wildest kingdom — and not just any base camp: you sleep at Rifugio Duca degli Abruzzi, at 2,388 meters, perched on the ridge of Monte Portella. Step outside the door and you’re already at altitude. The mountain starts right on the doormat.

Gran Sasso is the only place on the peninsula where you’ll find a glacier — the Calderone, the southernmost in Europe — Apennine chamois staring at you from the ridges and views that on clear days stretch all the way to the Adriatic. This is not a tamed mountain: here the weather makes the rules, the rock is real rock and the rewards are earned step by step.

Three days, three peaks, one refuge. You climb to the Roof of the Apennines, tackle the wild loop of Cefalone and finish in style with a sunrise on Monte Aquila that alone is worth the trip: setting off with headlamps, reaching the ridge as the sun splits the horizon and the whole massif lights up orange. Yes, that’s more or less our favorite color.

1. Climb the real roof of the ApenninesCorno Grande, at 2,912 meters, is the highest point in the continental Apennines. It’s not a peak "to tick off": it’s a serious ascent, with a final rocky section where you’ll need to use your hands too, and a summit from which, on clear days, you can see the Adriatic and half of central Italy at the same time. Beneath your feet lies the Calderone Glacier, the southernmost in Europe. The kind of thing you’ll be telling people about.
