A grassy basin below the mountain of three borders

A hike in the Orobie Alps starting from Valtorta Ceresola: lush woods, alpine pastures and views opening step by step, up to one of the most striking huts in Lombardy.

Rifugio Alberto Grassi stands near the Passo del Camisolo, set in a grassy basin at the foot of Pizzo dei Tre Signori — the peak that once marked the border between the Duchy of Milan, the Republic of Venice and the Grisons, which is where its name comes from. Built in 1921 and rebuilt after the Second World War, the hut serves home cooking with traditional mountain dishes.

It is 12 kilometres and 850 metres of ascent, passing the Passo del Gandazzo where the view opens for the first time. Lunch at the Grassi is part of the experience: those who have been come back.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike: 850 metres of ascent over twelve kilometres, on marked trails with no technical difficulty. Some regular walking helps. Bring boots, water and a windproof jacket: it is often breezy at the pass.
