Lago Pirola: the ancient larches of Alpe Ventina
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Intermediate
Description
Five-hundred-year-old trees and a lake at 2,283 metres
We start from the alpine pasture, near the Cappelletta dell'Alpe Ventina, in Valmalenco, and take a steep trail to the right winding through low mountain pines. The climb is quick and soon reaches a first shelf of large boulders.
We then cross a thin larch wood holding the most extraordinary part of the route: some of these ancient larches are more than four or five hundred years old. They were already mature trees when only shepherds passed this way, and walking among them is worth the trip on its own.
Higher up, Lago Pirola awaits at 2,283 metres, its crystal-clear water set among the rocks. Eleven kilometres and 900 metres of ascent: we have lunch on its shores.
