Description

The Dolomite balcony facing the Tre Cime

There are viewpoints, and then there is Monte Specie. At 2,307 metres above Carbonin, this summit sits exactly opposite the Tre Cime di Lavaredo and frames them as if from a grandstand: around you, Cristallo, the Cadini di Misurina and Croda Rossa d'Ampezzo complete the circle.

The best part is that getting there asks for nothing extreme. We climb from Carbonin, in the municipality of Dobbiaco, along well-marked high trails crossing the plateau up to Rifugio Vallandro; from there a last stretch of broad ridge leads to the top. Thirteen kilometres and 900 metres of ascent, six and a half hours on easy ground throughout.

We return the same way, with the Tre Cime in front of us for much of the descent. This is the right hike for anyone who wants the great Dolomite panorama without via ferratas or exposed sections.

Why come

  • the Tre Cime di Lavaredo seen head-on, not from the side
  • a 2,307-metre summit with no equipped sections
  • Rifugio Vallandro, a stop halfway along
  • Cristallo, Cadini di Misurina and Croda Rossa in a single view

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike: 900 metres of ascent and six and a half hours call for trained legs, but the ground stays easy all the way. Bring boots, water and a windproof jacket: at altitude the weather turns quickly, even in summer.

Come with the Guidders: book your place and let's climb Monte Specie together.

Guide

Alessandro

⛰ Hi there! I’m Alessandro. I’m 34 years old and live in the heart of the Dolomites, in the Cadore region. I am a certified International Mountain Leader (accredited by the Veneto Mountain Guide Association and UIMLA), a graduate in Sports Science, a mountain bike guide, and—believe it or not—a sommelier! After all, there’s nothing like a good glass of wine after a long hike. I love experiencing the mountains in every way possible: from trekking and trail running to mountain bike adventures. For me, moving through nature is pure energy, discovery, and emotion. Sharing this passion with others is my mission. Whether we are on a scenic trail or riding through the woods on two wheels, my goal is always the same: to provide authentic, active, and restorative experiences. See you on the trails… or maybe over a great glass of wine! 🍷🚵‍♂️🌲
