Lago del Culino in Val Gerola: easy trek and the flavours of Bitto cheese
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Easy
Description
An unhurried day in the Valley of Bitto cheese, among alpine pastures, stone huts and a mountain lake, with lunch in the hut based on the valley's produce.
The route
We set off with the Guidders from Rifugio Bar Bianco, above Gerola Alta, and climb gently across the pastures of Alpe Culino: this is where Bitto is made in summer, the cheese that gave its name to the whole Val Gerola. The trail is wide and well marked, the climb is moderate, and in little more than an hour and a half we reach Lago del Culino, at 1,959 metres.
The lake is a quiet basin surrounded by rhododendrons and larches, with Pizzo dei Tre Signori in the background. We linger, then return to the hut for lunch: polenta, Bitto and Casera, the true flavours of this valley.
Who it is for
- anyone wanting a safe first approach to the mountains
- families with children used to walking a couple of hours
- those who love pairing a walk with local food
- dogs welcome on a leash
Good to know
Lunch in the hut is optional and paid on site; you can bring a packed lunch instead. In October the larches of the valley are at their most colourful. Car pooling is arranged in the outing's Telegram group.
