Lago delle Locce: the hidden gem below Monte Rosa's East Face

Description
A turquoise lake beneath the most imposing wall in the Alps. Worth every step.
We set off with the Guidders from the moraine of the Belvedere Glacier and climb through woods and pastures, with the East Face of Monte Rosa growing ever larger before us. The route is there-and-back: we ascend steadily, taking in the altitude step by step, until we reach the Zamboni Zappa Refuge, nestled in the grassy basin of Alpe Pedriola. From there, just one last effort over rock and scree brings us to Lago delle Locce, a turquoise eye of water set into the rock, with Monte Rosa mirrored within it.
The East Face of Monte Rosa that we see as we climb is the highest and most imposing in the entire Alps: a sight that alone justifies the trip.

Good fitness is required, along with legs used to walking for hours: no technical sections, but a few steeper stretches keep us on our toes.
