The woods turn gold and the Maira river leads the way.
We set off with the Guidders from Cavallerleone, right into the heart of the Maira River Trail, and the dense woodland along the stream welcomes us straight away. It's a gentle traverse: the river carves wide bends, the greenery opens now and then onto lovely panoramic views, and in autumn everything turns red and gold under that warm afternoon light only this season can give. We walk at an easy pace, eyes open for herons and mallards that often stop right here looking for food along the water.
The village also holds a piece of Piedmont's industrial history: the Setificio Gioannetti-Ceriana, one of the region's most significant silk-making landmarks, plus the loggia of Palazzo Balbo-Ferrero, where you can taste the local biscuits.
