Among the most iconic excursions in the Apuan Alps, the trek to Monte Forato from Fornovolasco offers one of the most surprising natural spectacles in Tuscany: a gigantic arch of limestone rock suspended between the sky and the mountains.
The imposing natural arch of Monte Forato, shaped over the centuries by the combined action of water and wind, dominates the Passo dell’Arco with incredible dimensions: approximately 32 meters wide and 25 meters high. A true stone cathedral that makes this trail one of the most fascinating panoramic treks in the province of Lucca.
The route starts from the characteristic village of Fornovolasco, in the municipality of Gallicano, and develops along historic Apuan paths, crossing beech forests, ancient mule tracks, and glimpses of the Turrite di Gallicano stream. Step by step, you gain altitude up to the panoramic Foce di Petrosciana, one of the most evocative points in the area.
From here, the ascent becomes more decisive and finally offers a close-up view of Monte Forato: the arch suddenly appears before the eyes of the hikers, so imposing that it seems almost unreal.
