Monte Zeda 2,156 m: panoramic ridge in the Val Grande National Park
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Difficult
Description
The symbolic summit of the Val Grande, the largest wilderness area in the Alps: an airy ridge with chain-protected sections, between Lake Maggiore and Monte Rosa.
The route
We set off with the Guidders from Cappella Porta, above Caprezzo, and climb through the woods to Rifugio Pian Cavallone, on a grassy saddle at 1,530 metres. Here the best part begins: the ridge linking the Pian Cavallone summits to Monte Zeda, with airy, exposed passages and some chain-protected sections. It is not a via ferrata, but it requires a steady step and no fear of heights.
On the summit, at 2,156 metres, we look down on the Val Grande on one side and Lake Maggiore on the other, with Monte Rosa in the background. Return by the same route: 15 kilometres and 1,200 metres of ascent in total.
Who it is for
- experienced, fit hikers with experience on exposed ridges
- anyone wanting to enter the Val Grande wilderness without an overnight stay
- those seeking a view that holds lake, plain and Monte Rosa together
- minimum age 14, no dogs
Good to know
Packed lunch and at least two litres of water. In autumn the ridge can be cold and windy. The guide may shorten the loop to the Pian Cavallone summits if conditions do not allow the ridge. Car pooling in the outing's Telegram group.
