Monte Bregagno: from Montuglio to Sant'Amate above the lake

Woods, a small church and grassy ridges over Lake Como

A hike that smells of woodland, silence and big views over Lake Como. We start from the picnic area above Montuglio, alternating green trails and old cart tracks up to Sant'Amate, where the lovely little church of the same name awaits: one of the most photographed spots on this side, with the lake opening right below.

From here begins the longest and most intense climb, but every step is repaid by ever wider views: first Monte Bregagnino, then the summit of Monte Bregagno at 2,107 metres, with its grassy ridges dropping towards the lake.

It is 12 kilometres and 970 metres of ascent. From the top the view covers the whole lake, Monte Grona, the Legnone and, on clear days, the Rhaetian Alps on the horizon.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike: 970 metres of ascent over twelve kilometres, with the upper part on steep grassy ridges, but no technical sections. Bring boots, plenty of water and a cap: there is no shade on the ridges.
