Mount Garzirola and the San Lucio Refuge: A Panoramic Trek Between Italy and Switzerland in Val Cavargna
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Intermediate Plus
Description
A spectacular loop hike to discover one of the most fascinating and little-known sides of Val Cavargna, along the border between Italy and Switzerland.
Our goal will be Monte Garzirola (2116 m), a panoramic peak that dominates the entire area of Lake Lugano and the mountains between Como, Ticino and Val Cavargna.
The path gradually ascends through alpine pastures and wide panoramic ridges to reach the summit, from which the view opens onto a vast panorama that sweeps from the Lombard Prealps to the mountains of Canton Ticino.
We will walk along the spectacular border ridge between Italy and Switzerland, once the scene of stories and legends related to smuggling, an activity that for decades has characterized these border lands.
During the descent we will reach one of the most evocative places in the area: the Rifugio San Lucio, next to the splendid alpine church of the 14th century, one of the most fascinating mountain religious buildings in the Prealps.
Here, those who wish can stop to enjoy typical mountain dishes, immersed in a unique atmosphere of history, nature and tradition.
A panoramic and charming hike, perfect for Guidders who love great views and the stories of the border mountains.
