Monte Legnoncino: summit and Cadorna Line over Lake Como
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Easy Plus
Description
A balcony over the northern arm of Lake Como
Monte Legnoncino is one of those peaks the Guidders love from the first step: a natural balcony above Lake Como, with one of the widest views in the area. The climb is gradual but never dull, crossing different environments — woods, open ridges, panoramic stretches — that open onto the lake as you gain height.
Along the way we come across the remains of the Cadorna Line, the system of fortifications built during the First World War to defend the border: trenches, gun positions and military roads telling a little-known piece of these mountains' history.
From the summit, at 1,700 metres, the view runs free over the northern arm of the lake, the looming Monte Legnone next door and the Rhaetian Alps. On the way back we stop at Rifugio Bellano for coffee and a slice of cake: 8 kilometres and 500 metres of ascent in total.
Why come
- the view over the northern arm of Lake Como from the summit
- the trenches and positions of the Cadorna Line along the route
- 500 metres of ascent: a real summit within everyone's reach
- the coffee-and-cake stop at Rifugio Bellano
Who it suits
This is an easy hike: 8 kilometres and 500 metres of ascent on trails and military roads, with no technical sections. It works as a first outing at altitude and for those walking with older children. Bring hiking boots and water.
