Monte San Primo: the highest peak of the Triangolo Lariano

The highest summit between the two arms of the lake

Monte San Primo, at 1,682 metres, is the highest peak of the Triangolo Lariano, the wedge of mountains between the two arms of Lake Como. It is one of the most panoramic hikes in the whole area: from the top you see the Como arm and the Lecco arm at the same time.

We start from Colma di Sormano, the ideal access point for a gradual, consistently panoramic climb. The trail runs through high pastures and open ridges, with the eye constantly drawn to the lake and the mountains around it: the Grigne, the Resegone and, on clear days, the Alpine arc behind.

It is 16 kilometres and 560 metres of ascent: the length is the demanding part, not the gradient. At the summit we stop for a packed lunch with one of the finest views in Lombardy in front of us.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike for its length: 16 kilometres in seven hours, with only 560 metres of ascent and no technical sections. You need to be used to walking all day. Bring boots, plenty of water and a cap: there is no shade on the ridges.
