Description
A quiet ridge between Piedmont and Switzerland
An authentic hike in Val Vigezzo to discover Monte Ziccher, an elegant and little-visited summit on the border between Piedmont and Switzerland. We start from the free car park just before Rifugio Blitz and take a trail alternating woodland, open pastures and panoramic ridges.
The climb crosses the beech woods of the Valle dei Pittori, the Painters' Valley, named after the school of landscape painters born here that made the valley famous. Higher up the beeches give way to alpine meadows and a final rocky stretch to the top, where the view turns to Monte Rosa, Switzerland, Lake Maggiore and the mountains of the Varese area.
The return is a loop: we descend the panoramic ridge to the saddle overlooking the Swiss valley, cross Alpe Cortignasco and take the Sentiero dell'Acqua, perfect for cooling your feet in the streams before the last stretch through the woods.

Who it suits
This is an intermediate hike (grade E): 870 metres of ascent over nine kilometres, with some steep pitches and stony ground in places, but always on a marked trail. Bring boots, water and a packed lunch, eaten at the summit or at Bocchetta di Sant'Antonio if the wind picks up.
