Pizzo Camino: the giant of Val di Scalve from Schilpario
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Difficult Plus
Description
Fourteen hundred metres of climbing to a lunar summit
The hike starts from Piazzale degli Alpini in Schilpario with a long climb through the woods on a forest road, alternating gentle stretches with steeper ramps. The first goal is panoramic Malga Voia, then we continue among pastures and silence to the ruins of Malga Alta di Voia.
Here the effort starts to tell, but Passo Corna Busa (1,940 m) is close: from there the landscape turns lunar and we walk level towards the south, along the imposing walls of the Pizzo. Then the gully opens, the hardest part of the day: a firm gradient, loose stones and final rock steps, never too difficult but exposed to the wind.
It is 14 kilometres and 1,400 metres of ascent to reach 2,491 metres, where the summit cross marks one of the highest viewpoints in Val di Scalve.
Why come
- Pizzo Camino, the giant that dominates all of Val di Scalve
- Passo Corna Busa and its lunar landscape
- the final gully, the stretch that makes this climb memorable
- Malga Voia and its open pastures halfway up
Who it suits
This is a hard hike: 1,400 metres of ascent in eight hours, with a gully of loose stones and final rock steps where a sure step and no fear of heights are needed. Not suitable for beginners. Bring sturdy boots, a helmet (not included), poles and a windproof jacket.
