Riomaggiore-Corniglia: trekking through the hidden side of the Cinque Terre

Description
The Cinque Terre seen from within, not from the seafront.
We set off with the Guidders from Riomaggiore and climb straight away through olive groves and terraced vineyards, with the sea fading behind us at every switchback. This is a true traverse: we climb, we walk at altitude between the hilltop villages, and we descend all the way down to Corniglia. The classic coastal route would be too obvious and predictable: we know that well, and that's why we choose the high path, the one that passes through Volastra and offers truly authentic panoramic views. The final kilometres drop steeply toward the village, through Mediterranean scrub and dry-stone walls.
Corniglia is the only one of the Cinque Terre without direct access to the sea: perched on the ridge, it's reached via the famous 377 steps of the Lardarina. Arriving on foot, from above, has a whole different flavour.
