Description
Guidders, get your legs ready: this time we’re heading to conquer Cima delle Saline, in the heart of the Marguareis Massif, on a spectacular loop trek from Carnino Superiore, Briga Alta (CN).
A 16 km route and around 1,300 meters of elevation gain await us through one of the most distinctive environments in the Ligurian Alps: vast high-altitude grasslands, wild valleys, limestone rocks sculpted by water, and spectacular karst landscapes that make this area completely different from the classic Alpine mountains.
From Carnino Superiore we’ll climb toward Passo delle Saline and from there head for the summit. The effort will be rewarded with an immense panorama: from the nearby Ellero Valley to the mountains of the Marguareis, and when the clear September air allows it, your gaze can stretch all the way to the blue of the sea.
But the summit will be only part of the adventure.
We’ll continue toward Pian Balaur, then descend through Colle del Pas and enter a valley with a decidedly wilder character, where we’ll also encounter the curious Saracco Volante, one of the most distinctive rock formations along the route.
Finally, we’ll reach Passo delle Mastrelle to complete our great loop and return toward Carnino.
And Guidders, keep your eyes open: we’re in territory where chamois are right at home. With a bit of luck, they’ll be the ones watching us from the rocks as we cross their realm.

✨ What makes this trek unique
The Marguareis Massif is a mountain to explore, not simply to climb.
The limestone terrain has created a vast karst system of basins, sinkholes, cliffs, and plateaus that make the landscape surprising at every change of perspective.
This loop lets you cross several different environments in a single day.
From the grasslands above Carnino we’ll climb toward Passo delle Saline and the summit, then completely change scenery as we reach Pian Balaur, Colle del Pas, and Passo delle Mastrelle.
It’s a long and physically demanding trek, designed for fit Guidders who really want to walk for an entire day and discover one of the most distinctive mountains between Piedmont and Liguria.

Hi Guidders! 🧡 I’m Giorgia. I grew up between the Tanaro Valley and the Ligurian Alps—mountains overlooking the sea that have always held a special place in my heart. But there is another place that’s just as meaningful to me: the Varaita Valley, where the "Stone King" (Monviso) dominates the horizon and every trail tells ancient stories amidst incredible landscapes and peaks just waiting to be explored. For me, hiking and trail running are all about discovery. I love exploring new paths and sharing the wonders of nature with those I guide, because every experience is better when shared. I am a certified Environmental Hiking Guide, but first and foremost, I am a curious soul in love with the landscapes that raised me. You’ll find me with my backpack on, a ready smile, and a passion for listening to the wind through the crags, the silence of the woods, and all the stories the mountains have to tell.
