Spitzhorli & Straffelgrat: Autumn Loop Above Simplon Pass

A wide ridge, a scenic dossier of rock, and the Valais lighting up in October colors.

We set off with the Guidders from Simplon Pass, where the air is already crisp and the forests start turning gold. We climb steadily toward the Spitzhorli, following a broad, well-trodden ridge that gains height through high alpine pastures. From there the route continues along the Straffelgrat, the long ridge closing the valley to the west: a wide dossier, unmarked but with clear traces left by sheep and hikers over the years. The route is a loop: we climb one side and descend the other, closing the circle through ever-changing scenery.

There are no official marked trails here: this is real alpine terrain, rarely walked, where every hiker who passes leaves only their own footprints.
