Sunrise on Monte Generoso: a dawn hike between Italy and Switzerland

There are wake-ups that feel heavy... and others that are worth every minute of lost sleep. Sunrise on Monte Generoso (1,704 m) is one of those experiences that stays in your heart: the silence of the mountain, the sky changing color, and the sun slowly lighting up the Alps and the lakes of northern Italy create a spectacle that is hard to describe.

With the Guidders, we’ll set off while the world is still asleep, following the trails of Monte Generoso, one of the iconic mountains between Lombardy and Canton Ticino. We’ll hike by headlamp, immersed in the quiet of the forest, until we reach the summit in time to witness the sunrise.

As the first light begins to brighten the horizon, the view will open up in a full 360° panorama: Lake Como, Lake Lugano, Monte Rosa, the Swiss Alps, the Bernina Range, and, on the clearest days, even the Apennines will seem to emerge from the morning light.

After admiring the sunrise and sharing a scenic breakfast at the summit, we’ll begin the descent from a completely different perspective, enjoying the colors and tranquility of the mountain in the early hours of the day.
