Monte Cornizzolo at sunset: a loop from Eupilio

Sunset from the summit, head torches on the way down

Monte Cornizzolo is one of the best-loved peaks of the Triangolo Lariano, and at sunset it becomes another mountain: the light drops over the Brianza lakes, the towns switch on one after another, and from the summit at 1,240 metres the view runs from the Grigne to the plain.

We climb a loop from Eupilio, on mule tracks and woodland trails: 12 kilometres and 600 metres of ascent, with no technical sections and within reach of anyone who walks with some regularity. On the way up the scent of the woods keeps us company as the sun goes down; at the top we stop for a shared aperitif, the kind everyone brings from home and puts in the middle.

For the way back we descend with head torches along a clear, straightforward track: nothing difficult in the dark. The start time changes with the season, as it is set by the hour of sunset: you will always find it updated on the date you choose.

Who it suits

This is an easy hike, though not a short one: 600 metres of ascent and five hours in total. Bring hiking boots, a head torch and a windproof jacket: after sunset the temperature drops quickly, even in summer.
