The Como Lake Greenway: from Colonno to Griante among villas, villages and lake views

Eleven kilometres of mule tracks, stairways and cobbles that pass through the villages instead of above them: the Como Lake Greenway links Colonno to Griante along the old Via Regina, the Roman travellers' road, crossing Sala Comacina, Lenno, Mezzegra and Tremezzo.

The route

Almost all of it is flat, a few steps from the water: the highest point is 250 metres. We pass below the villas — Villa del Balbianello on its headland, Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo — among olive groves, arcades and small lakeside squares.

This is the right day out when the mountains are in cloud or under fresh snow: here you can walk in any weather, and in November the villages are empty.

Good to know

The return is by ferry or public bus: the ticket is not included and everyone buys their own. The villas in November are closed or on short hours: we look at them from outside. Packed lunch or a stop in one of the villages.

Getting there

Better without a car: train Milan–Como and then ferry or bus C10 to Colonno; the return from Griante is by ferry or the same bus. By car from Milan about one hour fifteen: park at Colonno and come back by ferry. Ferry and bus tickets are not included.
