The Lake Endine loop: sixteen flat kilometres among reed beds, villages and castles of Val Cavallina

Lake Endine is the only lake in the Bergamo area with no roads along its shores: the full loop is done on foot, sixteen almost entirely flat kilometres among reed beds, meadows and small villages. In November it is the place where fog becomes a reason to go.

The route

We start at Spinone al Lago and walk the whole perimeter through Monasterolo del Castello, with its fifteenth-century castle by the water, the reed beds of Endine Gaiano and the low paths below Ranzanico. Total climb: just over one hundred metres.

• anyone after herons, coots and cormorants: the lake is a special protection area

Good to know

Sixteen kilometres are still sixteen kilometres: comfortable shoes and a steady pace. Lunch is packed, with village bars along the way. Highest point 400 metres.

Getting there

By car from Milan about one hour ten (A4 to Seriate, then up Val Cavallina): parking on the lakefront at Spinone al Lago. Without a car: train to Bergamo and the Val Cavallina bus, Spinone stop.
