Sentiero del Pellegrino: a loop from Noli to Varigotti

Mediterranean scrub high above the Ligurian sea

This is probably the best-known trail in western Liguria: a route of history and views running high above the sea between Noli and Varigotti. It is usually walked one way; we do it as a loop, starting from the village of Noli, so we get back to the cars without public transport.

We cross Mediterranean scrub overlooking some of the finest beaches in Liguria, as far as the Grotta dei Falsari, the Smugglers' Cave: a cavity that legend says sheltered smugglers and their goods. It is the most photographed point of the route, and you see why the moment you look in.

We continue to the seafront at Varigotti, with its colourful houses and beach: lunch break and, for those who want, a swim. Then back on the trail towards Noli, in the greenery with the sea alongside all the way down. Thirteen kilometres and 750 metres of total ascent.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike: 13 kilometres with 750 metres of total ascent, on an undulating trail with stony sections. There are no exposed passages. Bring walking shoes, plenty of water and a cap: the scrub offers little shade. Pack a swimsuit if you want to swim.
