The Sangiatto lakes from Alpe Devero: mirrors of water above Crampiolo

Late-October Devero is the most photographed spot in Piedmont, and the Sangiatto lakes are the way to enjoy it one level above Crampiolo: two lakes in a bowl of larches, the plain opening below and the Cervandone ahead.

The route

From Alpe Devero we cross the plain and climb gently to Crampiolo, the most photographed hamlet of huts in Ossola. From there the trail continues through larches to Alpe Sangiatto and its lakes at 2,040 m.

Lunch on the shore of the big lake, with time to walk around it. On the way back we pass the Lago delle Streghe and finish at Devero.

Good to know

On foliage weekends the Devero car park fills up: early meeting. Cheese and bread at Crampiolo for anyone topping up their packed lunch.

Getting there

Alpe Devero is two hours ten from Milan: A26, expressway to Domodossola, then Crodo, Baceno and the Devero road. Paid parking, which fills up early on foliage weekends: early meeting and car pooling in the Telegram group.
