Rifugio Albani: a hike below the Presolana from Colere

Below the north faces of the queen of the Orobie

A climb into the heart of Val di Scalve, starting from Colere, one of the best-loved spots among Bergamo's hikers. Here the mountain shows its most authentic side straight away: cool woodland, trails that climb in earnest, alpine pastures and views that open little by little onto the great Orobie peaks.

Our goal is Rifugio Albani, at 1,939 metres, set in a spectacular position like an eagle watching over the valley. Getting there is a small achievement: 900 metres of ascent over 10 kilometres, on a climb that grants few breaks. The reward is a privileged view of the north faces of the Presolana, famous in the climbing world and capable of silencing even seasoned mountain-goers.

Along the way there is time to look more closely at what surrounds us: the trees of the wood, the alpine flowers along the path, the peaks drawing the horizon and the profile of the Presolana, queen of this valley. At the hut we stop for lunch before heading back down to Colere.

Who it suits

This is an intermediate hike, demanding for its length: eight hours in total and 900 metres of ascent call for trained legs and a habit of full days outdoors. There are no exposed sections. Bring boots, plenty of water and a windproof jacket.
