The hut that stands for the Gran Paradiso
An iconic trek in the heart of the Gran Paradiso National Park, between rushing streams, alpine pastures and views that grow grander as you climb. With the Guidders we set off from the valley floor of Valsavarenche and follow the historic path to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II, at 2,735 metres: one of the best-known huts in the Alps and the base for climbers heading to the summit of the Gran Paradiso.
The route runs through spectacular surroundings where it is not unusual to spot ibex and marmots: this is Italy's oldest national park, and the animals here are used to people. The views over glaciers and the great peaks that dominate the valley widen at every bend.
It is 12 kilometres and 780 metres of ascent, seven hours of walking on a well-marked and never particularly demanding trail. An accessible hike, but full of feeling, and perfect for breathing in real high-mountain air.

Who it suits
This is an intermediate hike: 780 metres of ascent and seven hours in total, on a well-marked trail with no technical difficulty. We reach 2,735 metres, so some familiarity with altitude helps. Bring boots, water and a windproof jacket.
