Laghetti di Sassersa: a trek from Primolo in Valmalenco
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Intermediate
Description
Three turquoise lakes on Valmalenco's red rock
We set off with the Guidders from Primolo, above Chiesa in Valmalenco, on a trail that climbs firmly through conifer woods and shaded stretches. The ascent is continuous but never dull, with steady gradients and passages between alpine pastures opening ever wider views over the valley.
Out of the woods the landscape changes completely: high meadows, rock and finally the Laghetti di Sassersa, set at 2,400 metres in wild, silent surroundings. On clear days they show an intense turquoise that contrasts with the reddish colour of the valley, an effect you will not find anywhere else.
Above us rises the slender profile of Pizzo Rachele. It is 10 kilometres and 1,100 metres of ascent: a serious climb, repaid by a hidden corner of Valmalenco where water and rock do all the work.
Why come
- the three Sassersa lakes at 2,400 metres, turquoise on red rock
- a colour contrast unique to Valmalenco
- Pizzo Rachele towering over the basin
- wild, silent surroundings away from the busy trails
Who it suits
This is an intermediate but demanding hike: 1,100 metres of ascent over ten kilometres, with a continuous climb and stony ground higher up. Trained legs are needed. Bring boots, poles for the descent, water and a packed lunch: there is nothing up there.
Come with the Guidders: book your place and let's climb to Sassersa.
