Val d'Otro: Walser hamlets and waterfalls above Alagna
Guiddy Difficulty Levels
Easy Plus
Description
A hanging valley at the foot of Monte Rosa
Val d'Otro, above Alagna Valsesia, is one of the most authentic corners of the whole Monte Rosa area: a natural terrace suspended above the valley floor, where nature, history and alpine culture meet.
We follow the old paths used by the Walser people, of Alemannic origin, who settled these mountains from the 13th century onwards. Starting from Alagna (1,191 m), the trail climbs the valley through woods and pastures to the high Walser hamlets, their wood-and-stone houses still lived in during summer, and to the waterfalls tumbling down the slope.
It is 10 kilometres and 600 metres of ascent: a steady climb without difficulty, reaching 1,800 metres, with Monte Rosa appearing overhead as soon as the valley opens.
Why come
- the Walser hamlets of Val d'Otro, still alive in summer
- the waterfalls along the valley slope
- Monte Rosa appearing suddenly as the valley opens
- 600 metres of ascent on ancient connecting paths
Who it suits
This is an easy hike: 600 metres of ascent over ten kilometres, on well-marked mule tracks and trails with no technical sections. Suitable for beginners too. Bring hiking boots, water and a packed lunch.
