Bivacco Zeb: Valle del Liro above the upper lake

A lonely valley and a balcony on the Swiss border

An authentic trek on the wildest side of the upper Lake Como, discovering Bivacco Zeb: one of the most spectacular viewpoints between Valchiavenna and the Swiss border, and one of those places where you meet almost nobody.

The hike crosses the lonely Valle del Liro, an untouched alpine setting where woods, pastures and open spaces create the atmosphere of the real mountains. The trail climbs steadily through larch woods and clearings, accompanied by the silence of the valley and by ever wider views over the border mountains between Italy and Switzerland.

It is 17 kilometres and 1,400 metres of ascent over eight hours: a long, demanding day, repaid by surroundings that feel from another era. The return follows the same route.

Who it suits

This is a hard hike: 17 kilometres and 1,400 metres of ascent in eight hours, climbing continuously. Good fitness and experience of long days are needed. Bring sturdy boots, poles, plenty of water and a windproof jacket.
